2025 Earth Day-The Importance of Honeybees

April 22, 2025
Celebrated every year, Earth Day serves as a reminder for us to be good stewards to this beautiful planet we have been blessed with. Honeybees play a huge factor into the health of our world, which is why protecting them is vital in order for our earth to continue to thrive.
Did you know that bees are one of the world’s most important pollinators? Their pollinated crops are valued between $235 – $577 billion worldwide. These pollen-loving insects are responsible for maintaining our world’s ecosystems and providing food for the global population. Without them, our world would be in shambles. No Honeybees = No Food! In efforts to maintain the earth’s ecosystem and food supply through honeybees, beekeepers travel all over the United States with beehives to pollinate crops!
Now more than ever, bees are decreasing in population rapidly. Reasons for this are due to:
- Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)
- Invasive Species
- Habitat Loss
Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is when the majority of worker bees in the hive disappear. Worker bees are responsible for going out and collecting the pollen from flowers. Without them, hives cannot produce enough food for the hive during winter and pollination is not completed to its full extent. Some factors that contribute to CCD occurring are pesticides, parasites, and other environmental stressors that alter the overall health of honeybees.
Habitat loss is a rapidly growing threat to honeybees. With more land, trees, and crops being replaced with houses and shopping centers, bees are losing their homes and food supply at an alarming rate.
Invasive species are also increasingly becoming a threat to honeybees. That innocent species, whether it’s a seed or animal, we introduce into a new habitat eventually begins to take over other species’ native habitats, which makes it much harder for native species to find food and thrive.
Recognizing that our world’s honeybees need help is the first step in making sure our world stays healthy and thriving in the many ecosystems. As you celebrate our beautiful earth today, don’t forget to appreciate the hard-working honeybee and discover how you can help preserve their legacy. Our world depends on it!
