Helpful Reminders & Safety Tips

Be on the lookout as you begin digging into your outdoor chores this Spring and Summer. Hidden dangers can appear if you are not aware of where to look. Here are a few things you can practice to ensure you’re safe when out in your yard:

  • Wear Gloves, Boots/Gardening Shoes
  • Pants and Long Sleeve Shirts
  • Use appropriate tools instead of hands (shovels, rakes, etc.)

Here in the South, there are three common outdoor dangers to look out for:

Poison Ivy

You’ve heard the saying, “Leaves of three, leave it be!” This applies to poison ivy. This allergenic plant can be found in wooded areas, forests, gardens, and wetland areas. It’s important to recognize poison ivy due to its poisonous tendencies. Once the oily resin found in poison ivy makes contact with the skin, it can lead to itchy, inflamed rashes and blisters all over the body. The reaction itself is not contagious, but if the oil gets on shoes, clothes, or any other objects it can spread to whoever touches those items. That’s why it’s important to thoroughly clean anything and everything you were using/wearing when you came into contact with poison ivy. Weed killers, whether store bought or homemade, effectively get rid of poison ivy. Taking the necessary precautions when dealing with poison ivy will help in making sure you and your family stay safe.

Snakes

Snakes can hide and slide around anywhere and everywhere. From rocks and grass to trees and under logs, these slithery creatures can call any place home; even in outdoor pots and planters! It’s important to know which snakes are harmless and which ones are venomous. To name a few:

Venomous Snakes:

  • Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Rattlesnake

Non-Venomous Snakes:

  • Black Rat Snake, Garter Snake, Green Snake, Eastern King Snake

To know if the snake is venomous or not, carefully examine their body features from a distance. Venomous snakes usually have diamond-shaped heads and oval-shaped pupils.

Spiders

Spiders are an important part of nature, but we still need to be careful when dealing with them. Most spiders are harmless, but there are a few poisonous spiders to make sure you stay away from:

  • Black Widow
  • Brown Recluse
  • Yellow Sac Spider

Spiders are great for eating insects, serving as natural pest control. They consume bugs that could be harmful to crops, gardens, and other outdoor areas. These insects can be found practically anywhere, but Black Widows love to live in dark, damp places. No matter if a spider is poisonous or not, make sure you examine the area you are about to work in first to check for spiders, snakes, poison ivy, and other things that could potentially cause harm.
